Putrada Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the bright half (Shukl Paksh) of Shravana. As the name itself shows, it is observed particularly by infertile couples in order to get a progeny (traditionally a son was desired). The observance of fast and piety on this day is said to result in getting a son, and also destroy the sins of the aspirants. Like other Ekadashis; it is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Putrada Ekadashi Lord Narayana is worshiped. After taking bath early in the morning and completing daily work, clean clothes are worn and Lord Hari is worshiped. First of all, Lord Narayana is worshiped with incense stick and small lamp(deepak). After this, a person, as per his capacity, offers flowers, fruits, coconut, betel leaf, betel nut, clove, berries, Amla etc. to the Lord. After observing fast for the whole day, Katha is heard in the evening and fruits are eaten. Gifting lamps(deep) on this day is considered auspicious.Fast is observed, Vishnu is worshipped and meditated upon, and the Brahmins, learned in the Vedas and sacred religious lore, are fed and given robes, money, in charity on this day.

At night the aspirants should sleep in the room where Vishnu has been worshipped.
