Umananda Temple

Umananda Temple

Umananda Temple is located on a small riverine island called Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra river. The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Shiva.

Umananda Temple was built in 1694 A.D. by King Gadadhar Singh one of the ablest and strongest rulers of the Ahom dynasty. The original temple was damaged by an earthquake and it was later rebuilt by a local merchant.

The walls of the temple are adorned with exquisitely carved rock-cut figures of gods and goddesses. There are representations of Surya, Ganesha, Shiva and Devi in addition to those of Vishnu and his ten incarnations.

Devotees believe that offering prayers here on the Amavasya day when it falls on Monday brings the highest bliss. The annual Shiva Chaturdasi festival attracts followers from all across the country.
