Naukuchiatal

Overview

Located at the foothills of the Kumaon Mountains, Naukuchiatal is perhaps the most picturesque lake in Uttarakhand, surrounded by green slopes and oak forests. At an altitude of 1,219 m and just 24 km from Nainital, Naukuchiatal or the 'nine-cornered lake' is fed by an underwater spring. It is believed by the locals that whoever sees all the nine corners of the lake at one shot, attains Nirvana.

Naukuchiatal lies at an altitude of 1219 m above the sea level, covered with green slopes, some of them terraced with farm / fields, and oak forests which attract large numbers of rare migratory and Himalayan birds. Butterflies of many different species can also be spotted here during season.Naukuchiatal dates back to the times of Mahbharat, when the pandavas during their time of exile came to Naukuchiatal and Bhimtal. The Lake at Naukuchiatal is lined with trees on its bank and has many orchards closeby. One can enjoy boating and angling activities in the lake. This place is also popular for adventure activities such as bird watching, mountain biking, para gliding and trekking to places such as Jandhidhar and Jungliagaon. One of the best ways to experience Naukuchiatal is by combining the trip with a visit to the other "tals" in the area including Nainital, Bhimtal and Sattal. While Nainital is 24 kms from Naukuchiatal, Bhimtal and Sattal are just about 4 kms from here. Bhimtal is famous for the largest lake in the district.

Vaishno Devi Mandir is a famous temple in Naukuchiatal. At the entrance one can see a giant statue of Lord Hanuman. Timings 5 am-11 pm.

Bhimtal just 4 km from Naukuchiatal, it is a place, separated by a small forest. It also has a small lake, which is believed to be created by Bhim (One of the Pandava Brother in the epic Mahabharata). It is believed that Pandvas had spent some time here during their exile, and Bhim had hit the ground with his gada to create this lake. There is an ancient Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple on the banks of this lake
