Nilambur


Overview

Nilambur is located in Malappuram district of Kerala, South India. It is at a distance of about 70 km from Calicut and 100 km from Ooty (Uddagamandalam). Nilambur is famous for its green forests, especially the wildlife habitat, clean water rivers, waterfalls and teak plantations. Nilambur is situated close to The Nilgiris range of the Western Ghats on the banks of the Chaliyar river. It is about 40 kilometres from Malappuram town.

Nilambur is located on the Calicut-Ooty road which gives it much prominence.One of the best school of kerala, PEEVEES Public School is located in nilambur.Nilambur is also home to the oldest teak plantation in the world, called Conolly's plot. It is claimed that the world's tallest or biggest teak tree is in the Nilambur Teak Preserve. Nilambur is also famous for its bamboos. The word Nilambur means place of Nilimba (Sanskrit word for Bamboo). Some nearby places are Chungathara, Pookkottumpadam and Edakkara.

Main attractions in Nilambur are Connolly Plot and Teak Museum, which is maintained by the Kerala Forest Research Institute. Hanging bridge, which is the longest bridge in Kerala, is another popular attraction in the town. Nedumkayam forest reserve and its elephant camp are also frequented by tourists visiting Nilambur.
