Tuljapur


Overview

Tuljapur is one of the four Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra where mother Goddess, Shakti is worshipped. The temple is located on a hill known as Yamunachala, on the slopes of the Sahayadri range in Maharashtra near Sholapur.

Tuljapur is quite neat and tidy with roads paved with concrete and lighting provided by electricity. Tuljapur is famous for the Bhavani Temple. Here one can find bhakts or devotees of the devi tied together in a well knit sect. The members of this sect have a typical dress, consisting of an angarkha or long flowing shirt, a cap studded with Kavadis and carries a torch with them. Their occupation is singing devotional songs relating to devi to the tune of tuntune, tal and sambal.The town is home to a famous temple dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Bhavani. The town received much importance in past centuries, since the temple enjoys a special association with the Bhonsale clan to which Chhatrapati Shivaji belonged. Goddess Bhavani was the family deity of the Bhonsale clan.

 

The temple-town of Pandharapura, the Dharashiv caves, and the fort of Naldurg all lie within easy reach. As the Goddess Bhavani is the deity of many people from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh they come walking in Dasera Festival to worship Goddess Bhavani
