Temple Tour Dwarka Somnath Palitana:

Dwarka :

Dwarka, on the west coast of Gujarat on the shore of the Arabian Sea, features in most of the legends surrounding Lord Krishna. It is from here that the grown Lord Krishna is supposed to have ruled his kingdom. Dwarka is a significant pilgrimage site for the Hindus. In the middle of the town is the Dwarkadhish Temple, which was built in the 16th century. Dwarkadish is another name of Lord Krishna that means the "Lord of Dwarka". The five-storey high temple is built on seventy-two pillars. The temple spire is 78.3m (235 feet) high. From the temple dome waves an eighty-four foot long multicolored flag decorated with the symbols of the sun and moon. Lord Krishna's grandson, Vajranabha, is said to have built the original temple of Dwarkadhish over the hari-griha (Lord Krishna's residential place). The sanctum of the temple is formed by the Jagat Mandir, or Nija Mandir, which dates back at least 2500 years. The Jagat Mandir has a tall tower and a hall of audience.

Festival

Janmashtami (birthday of Lord Krishna), celebrated in the month of August/September, is a major festival of Dwarka.

Travel Tip: Check for temple Darshan timings applicable during the time of visit before planning the next day’s itinerary. Like other Krishna Temples, Beyt Dwarka and Dwarkadhish temple closes and reopens several times in a day.

Somnath :

The temple of Somnath, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva is situated just 5 kms off town of Veraval and 79 Kms. from Junagadh. The temple has imposing architecture and is a beautiful sight facing the blue expanse of the Arabian Sea.

Bhavnagar :

Located at 220 kms from Ahmeadabad and 300 kms from Somnath, Bhavnagar today is a bustling town that retains some of its royal past and charm. Due to its proximity to Palitana and Khodiyar Mata temple, Bhavnagar has been a popular tourist destination.

Palitana The Palitana temples are considered the most sacred pilgrimage place (tirtha) by the Jain community. There are more than 1300 temples located on the Shatrunjaya hills, exquisitely carved in marble. The main temple on top of the hill, is dedicated to 1st tirthankar lord Adinath (Rishabdeva).

No one is allowed to sleep overnight including the priest, because the temple city has been built as an abode for the Gods. The town is considered by many Jains to be more important than the temple covered hills of Jharkhand, Mt Abu and Girnar. Palitana was the capital of a princely state of the Gohil Rajput clan. It is also one of the greatest tourist attractions in Gujarat for foreign tourists. Every year millions of people are coming to visit these temples.

There are hundreds of other temples (besides those on the Shatrunjaya hills).
