Holi In West Bengal

Dol Purnima or Dol Jatra, is the popular name for Holi in Bengal. The elaborately decorated palanquin of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is taken round the city on this day. Prayers are offered to Lord Krishna and Agnidev. After the rituals are over, he smears Lord Krishna's idol with Gulal marking the start of the festivities. This festival is also marked by the performances of Dolothsava in which the image of Lord Vishnu is swayed in decorated swings and colored powder is offered to the God.

Away from the tumult of the daily life, the festival of Holi still retains its charm in Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan. The student dressed in saffron coloured clothes and adorned with garlands of fragrant flowers sing and dance in the presence of their teachers and other distinguished guests. The festival finally comes to an end when they smear the auspicious black abhir and dry gulal powder is smeared on everyone's forehead. Liquid colors are forbidden.
