Naanmadhiya Perumal Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and also one of the 108 Divya Desam Temples. The legend says that the Lord Chandra (The Moon God) got relieved from His curse when He visited this temple and took bath in the holy temple tank. The curse was for the reason that Lord Chandra married the twenty seven daughters of King Daksha Prajapati but partially showed more love on Rohini and was not paying proper attention to His other 26 wives.

By knowing this, the king Daksha Prajapati cursed Lord Chandra that the handsome face of Lord Chandra will be depreciated day by day. The cursed Lord Chandra was advised by His Guru Brahaspathi to worship Lord Vishnu to get relieve of His sins. As the curse of Lord Chandra (the moon god) was got relieved in this temple, the temple is also called as ‘Chandra Shaba Harar’. And it is said that Lord Vishnu was pleased by Lord Chandra’s devotion and wore Him on His head as an ornament.
