When Parvati saw the beauty of her son she was so filled with love for him that she wanted all the gods to come and wish him well. Everyone came to pay homage to this splendid son of Shiva and Parvati. Sani, according to Hindu astrology, is the bringer of misfortune if he appears on one's astrological chart. When he came to Mt Kailas, he would not look at the child, merely looking sideways which puzzled Parvati.
She forced him to look at Ganesh, and against his will he looked at the child from the corner of his eye. The child's head exploded and Parvati's anger and grief knew no bounds; Shiva sent his messengers posthaste to look for a substitute, and they found an elephant whose head they brought back
