The most fundamental of Hindu deities, is the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - popular deities include Ganesha, Krishna, Hanuman and goddesses like Lakshmi, Durga,Saraswati.
Shiva found the world that Brahma had created a world full of pain and suffering. He wept at the sufferings of the world and lamented that Brahma had created a world that was mere Maya- an illusion. Shiva wept and from his tears came the rudraksha beads.
Brahma was not much affected by Shiva's lamentations and instead sprouted four heads to admire his creation and then a fifth one for his pride.
The sight of an uncaring creator, infuriated Shiva. He became Bhairava, the furious one and attacked Brahma and wrenched out his fifth head, which was full of pride. The angered Brahma ordained that for this act of disrespect Shiva would never be invited to any sacrifice or given any portion of the sacred offerings. But Bhairava did not care and return ordained that Brahma would never be worshipped and people will not build temples to revere him.
And so Brahma is not worshipped in India except at two shrines: Pushkar in Rajasthan and Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.
