Among the few surviving records that describe the erection of Temple is a remarkable palm-leaf manuscript recording in detail the building operations of the thirteenth-century Surya mandir at Konark in Orissa. The manuscript lists the workmen, their salaries and rules of conduct, and provides an account over several years of the various building operations. Unlike the pyramids of Egypt and similar structures of other cultures mandirs were not built by slave labour. The workers were devotees, inspired by a love of God, not fear of man.
