Lonavala is a popular hill station and a municipal council situated in Pune District, Maharashtra. The city is located 64 km from Pune city and 96 km from Mumbai. It lies 622 m above sea level in the Sahyadri Ranges, which separate the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan Coast
Lonavala is at an altitude of 625 m and is the most popular weekend destination from Mumbai and Pune,set the lush green hills of the Sahyadris. Known as the Jewel of the Sahyadri it offers the tourist pristine woods and valleys, gushing waterfalls, historic caves, and scenic vistas.
The surroundings hills were the stronghold of the Maratha rulers, who practised guerrilla warfare from here, against the Moghuls and later the British.Karla and Bhaja Caves are located 11 Km from the town and are a must visit. These rock-cut cave temples date back to 2nd century BC and exhibit one of the oldest and finest examples of Buddhist rock cut temples, belonging to the Hinayana sect of Buddhism.
The town's many artificial lakes are Bushy, Tungarli and Pawna. Fishing is allowed on these lakes. Ryewood Park is a beautifully landscaped area frequented by families and couples. Bushy Dam is worth a visit during the monsoons when the overflowing waters create a gushing waterfall over the dam; it's a popular picnic spot all round the year. Duke's Nose named after Duke Wellington, is a pointed cliff which offers sweeping views of the region. Excursions from Lonavala include the town of Kamshet known for its paragliding opportunities.
