Bhandardara is formed by the dammed waters of the Pravara river.Located in the middle of the Sahyadri Hills, and about 185 km from Mumbai on the Nasik road, is the hill station Bhandardara. It is known for its high mountains, waterfalls and lush greenery.
Bhandardara is easily among the most beautiful of all holiday resorts. A perfect stopover on the way to or from Shirdi, it is a charming little picnic spot. Amidst the dense green-forest, lies the most splendid lake of the country - Arthur Lake.
The nearest town to Bhandardara is Nashik, which is accessible by road. Although this village resort does not have a railway station, it is well connected to other cities in Maharashtra by road. The village is surrounded by Mount Kalsubai, which is the highest peak of the state. It provides scope for trekking and mountaineering.
There are also the forts of Ratangad and Harishchandragad Fort to see here. The Ratangad Fort is around 200 years old and from the fort, views of Bhandardara are available. The Harishchandragad Fort was built during the 6th century, when the Kalchuri Dynasty ruled.
The small town of Bhandardara is evidence of the engineering skills of ancient times in the form of Wilson Dam. The dam was built in 1910, and is the largest earthen dam of the country. There is also the Arthur Lake and the Umbrella Falls close by which are scenic spots in this village.
But what really attracts tourists to Bhandardara is its greenery, its wide open spaces and its natural beauty. The air of Bhandardara is unpolluted and there has been very little commercialisation here .
